Casa Colibri de Atenas is conveniently located 25 minutes from Juan Santamaria Int’l Airport (SJO), 35 minutes from San Jose, 45 minutes from beaches, 1.5hrs from Poas Volcano, 2 hrs from Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs, 2 hrs from Manuel Antonio, and 2.5 hrs from Monteverde Cloud Forest. We are centrally located to nearly all the best sights and activities in Costa Rica.

Our home is nestled on the Pica Flora ridge above Atenas. At our altitude of 2,800′, we have very few insects. The undisrupted balance of nature allows natural predators (gekkos, iguanas, oppossums, etc) to dispatch most of the few pests that live at this altitude, including most mosquitoes.

We have amazing weather year round. The rainy season is especially enjoyable with brilliant, blue sunrises and then the occasional afternoon tropical downpour. Conde Nast and National Geographic have dubbed our town as having the ‘best climate in the world‘.

Casa Colibri is equipped with all the amenities you’ll need to make it your home away from home. WiFi, Cable TV, fully stocked kitchen with all your cooking needs. Bedroom 1 on the first floor has a king size bed, large closet space, en suite shower/toilet, and direct access to the outdoor jacuzzi. Bedroom 2 on the second floor has a queen size bed plus a single bed, large work desk, walk-in closet, luxurious en suite bathroom with double sinks, shower, and jacuzzi and a luxurious balcony overlooking the central valley and our large swimming pool.

I can’t say enough positive things about this house. We pulled up to the house and to our pleasure, it looks EXACTLY like the pictures. Charlie met us there and gave us the overall rundown of the house and local things to do, the various insects and creatures we may or may not encounter and their level of danger, and answered any questions we had. We made this place our home for our stay. It really has a very relaxing feel to come home to after our LONG days of exploring and romping all over Costa Rica. Waking up in the mornings to the most exquisite views really made an epic start to each of our days. Atenas is amazing. It’s far enough removed from the city and the quiet made for a peaceful and serene stay. We made friends with the birds and lizards that we co-inhabited with and enjoyed nightly swims in the pool. The fully stocked kitchen made our breakfast and dinners easy and the architecture of this place is really unique and adds to the Costa Rican feel. We had a blast gathered upstairs staring out the window during the torrential downpour. This is the place to stay! Thank you so much for being so welcoming and helpful to us gals during our stay! I’d give more than 5 stars if I could! Poravida!!!

My husband and I just left this tropical mountain paradise and miss it already. You will wake up each morning to the sounds of birds chirping which will draw you to the balcony to take full advantage of the sights and sounds that surround this property. There are a couple large trees in the back that attract a variety of birds so this is truly a bird lover’s paradise. Imagine my excitement to see a toucan fly by!!! Some mornings you will find cattle grazing on the mountainside. We considered ourselves very lucky if we were able to see any animals or critters native to Costa Rica. In fact, I was bummed that I was not able to see any Scorpions. (which, by the way, are of the non-venomous variety here) I did, however see an Iguana sun bathing on the rooftop living la Pura Vida! What a beautiful sight. I read in a previous review where someone was put off by geckos? Having lived in Japan and Hawaii, geckos in the home were not uncommon. Mosquitos love me so the first time I heard a gecko, I was relieved and felt at ease. Thanks to the gecko who happened to visit during our stay, mosquitos – which I find more of a nuisance – were not a problem for me.

The pool is perfect, both warm and inviting any time of day. This is a true lap pool and my husband took full advantage by swimming laps each morning while I lounged around in the afternoons with the available floaters. Clean and clear, there was only one day where one of the volcanos was very active and the volcanic ash did affect the water’s clarity. It wasn’t that serious though, knowing the reason for it, but Charlie did send someone over to clean it.

A cell phone is provided with the property in case you need to contact the owners or you can use WhatsApp. Casa Colibri is conveniently located close to town and centrally located to many attractions. Charlie and Gloria were very helpful in offering advice and helping us figure out what we might want to see and do during our stay there. If you’re there on a Friday, I would recommend the Farmers Market in town. Oh, how I miss the fresh and tasty fruit.
