According to the website for Cannabis Energy Drink, it is 100% legal in the United States. The question about the legality of products that contain hemp seems to stem from the Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) 2001 ban on all hemp products. However, that ban was reversed after an appeal was filed with the US Circuit Court of Appeals.

The confusion may also be because of hemp’s association with marijuana. Hemp and marijuana are both derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. However, they differ in composition. So, of course, we conducted our own research into the ingredients.

We don’t disagree that some of the ingredients in Cannabis Energy Drink are beneficial. For example, B vitamins are necessary for good health. Specifically, the product contains vitamins B3, B6, and B12. Vitamin B3, or niacin, is useful for cardiovascular health, vitamin B6 is involved in metabolic processes, and vitamin B12 helps keep nerves and blood cells healthy. [4] [5] [6]

The makers of Cannabis Energy Drink also state that the hemp oil in the drink provides important nutritional benefits in the form of linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linoleic acid (LNA). These are just fancy names for Omega-6 fatty acid and Omega-3 fatty acid, respectively. These make hemp oil a healthy fat, beneficial to heart health. [7]

The balance of the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in hemp oil is said to be just the right balance of what the body needs in terms of nutrition. One tablespoon of hemp oil contains all the essential fatty acids (EFAs) a person needs in a day.

Taurine is an ingredient commonly used in energy drinks. It is a naturally-occurring amino sulfonic acid that is found in animal tissues. In the human body, it is found in the large intestine and is a major component of bile. The name taurine comes from the Latin word for ox or bull. It was so named because scientists first isolated the substance in ox bile. [9]

In one study involving men who were trained for endurance cycling, researchers gave participants in the control group a zero-calorie drink containing taurine one hour before they exercised, and a placebo for the others. The scientists concluded that taurine had no effect on the physical performance of the men. [11]

Another study looked at whether taurine might affect muscle soreness following exercise. Researchers conducted a double-blind study involving 36 male subjects. The participants who took taurine were asked to take 2 grams three times per day for two weeks before the exercise test and for four days afterward. The results did not show any significant reduction in soreness as compared to those participants who took a placebo. [12]
