• Summary: Antimicrobial resistance is an imminent threat on a worldwide scale. The primary reason for this dramatic increase in antimicrobial resistance is the misuse of antimicrobial agents. Examples of antimicrobial misuse may include prescribing antibiotics for viral infections and prescribing unnecessarily broad-spectrum agents, among others. The state of Alabama is no exception to this increase in antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial stewardship, defined as coordinated strategies to improve the use of antimicrobials, is the best defense against increasing antimicrobial stewardship. The purpose of this continuing education program is to provide education regarding antimicrobial resistance, discuss legal factors and regulations associated with antimicrobial resistance, and provide ideas for the appropriate implementation of antimicrobial stewardship strategies.

• Funding for the Summit on Antimicrobial Stewardship was provided by the Alabama Department of Public Health’s, Bureau of Communicable Disease through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, being Grant number 6 NU50CK000396-03-04, CFDA # 93.323, Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity for Infectious Diseases.

• Summary: The Award-Winning The Pharmacist and Patient-Centered Diabetes Care certificate training program is an intensive educational experience designed to equip pharmacists with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to provide effective, evidence-based diabetes care. Five self-study modules provide comprehensive instruction in current diabetes concepts and standards of care. The live seminar incorporates case studies and hands-on skills training focused on the situations most likely to be encountered—as well as the services most needed—in community and ambulatory care practice settings. Learners will gain experience evaluating and adjusting drug therapy regimens for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, counseling patients about lifestyle interventions, analyzing and interpreting self-monitoring of blood glucose results, assessing the overall health status of patients to identify needed monitoring and interventions, and providing comprehensive instruction in current standards of care for patients with diabetes.

• Summary: The objectives of this CE article are to 1) identify problems experienced by Medicare patients with limited income, 2) provide an overview of assistance programs for Medicare patients with limited income, and 3) describe the role and responsibilities of Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs). This program has been created or produced by the local Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) with financial assistance, in whole or in part, through a grant from the Administration for Community Living (ACL).

No refunds for cancellations on or after 30 days prior to a program. Cancellations prior to 30 days before a program will receive a refund minus a $50 processing fee. However, learners who redeem an APhA enrollment code will be charged a fee of $175 regardless whether or not they complete any portion of the self-study. In the rare event the program is cancelled, Auburn University will give registered learners the option of rolling over their prepaid registration to a future course hosted by Auburn University.
