Most people don’t realize that cardiovascular disease (CVD) claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer and Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease combined. Statistics for CVD are grim. The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that 2,200 Americans die of cardiovascular (CVD) each day – that’s an average of one death every 40 seconds. The good news? According to the AHA, close to 80% of cardiovascular disease is preventable. Education, preventive care, and early detection can make a difference.

Choices we make every day influence our well-being. By knowing our family history and making heart healthy lifestyle decisions, we may be able to delay the onset or even prevent cardiovascular disease. Understanding some of the most common heart conditions may help us recognize early signs and symptoms of heart trouble in our own health or those we love. Regular screenings, scheduled well check-ups with our health care providers, and good dental hygiene can help us live full and healthy lives.

Throughout the year, Premier Health offers a variety of educational programs and heart health screenings to increase awareness and encourage healthy decision-making. See our web calendar to learn more about upcoming seminars, screenings, and special events. Premier HeartWorks

Unfortunately, in its earliest and most treatable stages, heart disease rarely reveals itself through symptoms. According to the American Heart Association, approximately every 40 seconds an American will have a heart attack. For many people, a heart attack is their first clue of heart trouble.

Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women. Does heart disease or stroke run in your family? Have you ever been told your blood pressure or cholesterol levels are too high? Do you smoke? With all of this in mind, you may be wondering how much you’re at risk of having a heart attack. Your concern could be answered by a Premier Health Heart CT, also known as coronary calcium scoring. This is a non-invasive imaging test that takes less than 30 minutes of your time. Don’t wait for chest pain and other symptoms to warn you of trouble – find heart disease before it finds you.

• Coronary angioplasty or cardiac catheterization: During this procedure, a cardiologist inserts a catheter through a blood vessel in your arm or leg, and with the help of a special X-ray machine, gently guides it to your heart. Contrast dye is injected through the catheter and X-ray movies are created as the dye moves through your heart. A cardiac catheterization can detect a narrowed or blocked artery that supplies the heart muscle with oxygen and other nutrients.

• Echocardiogram or echo: High-frequency sound waves are sent through a transducer that is placed on your chest. This produces pictures of the heart’s valves and chambers when they move. An echocardiogram can also provide information about your heart’s pumping action by a measurement known as an ejection fraction or EF. In a healthy heart, the ejection fraction is about 55 percent. This means that just over half of the blood filling the ventricle with each cardiac cycle is pumped out with a contraction.

• Magnetic resonance imaging or MRI: A large magnet and radio waves are used to produce a picture of the heart’s valves and chambers. An MRI can create moving images of the heart as it is pumping and can detect abnormal blood flow through the heart.
