Tell us about yourself and your business

E-Sam Energy is an indigenous Nigerian company that specializes is providing customized renewable energy (Solar and Wind Energy) solutions to homes, businesses, estates and smart cities. We are currently working on two ground breaking projects in Delta State: the construction of a 1MW Solar PV Plant in Otokutu for the residents of an estate and a 10MW Solar PV Plant in Agbor for commercial clients like industries, factories, banks and hotels. 2. How much did you need to start your business and how were you able to raise that capital?

The major challenge I face with my business is raising funds because most of my projects are capital intensive. Renewable energy is a relatively new field in Nigeria and you have to do a lot of convincing to generate the required investment. You have to do a lot of marketing through flyers, online publications and face to face with potential clients, business partners or investors.

I raised funds through strategic partnerships like partnering with other renewable energy firms that specialize in other aspects of the field. For example, I have a partner that fabricates solar panels so I can get these panels at a discounted rate or even on credit and we can agree on a long term repayment plan. I also have partners that supply batteries & inverters and technical partners that I co-develop projects with. Lastly, I raise funds through selling out shares in my company.

In 5 years, E-Sam Energy aims to have a total installed capacity of over 100MW across Nigeria. We are currently working on several projects across the country although still in Proposal stage. Looking to build a 10MW offshore wind energy farm in Lagos state and 10MW Solar Farms in Edo, Anambra, FCT, Rivers, Oyo, Kano, Gombe and Kaduna. 5. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs looking to start a business or invest in Africa?

I would advice any young and aspiring entrepreneur to “DREAM” and dream big. There are no limits to what anyone can achieve. All it takes is patience, persistence and perseverance. Don’t just dream but act on it. No idea comes out fully formed you just have to start and the dream will grow into you.

My advise is to start now, where you are and with what you have. You’ll develop new muscles of strength along the way. Africa is a virgin land with boundless possibilities and opportunities to innovate, we just have to think out of the box. And lastly, you have to remain focused on your journey to greatness.
