The Ford Racing Performance Hot Rod Cam should appeal to just about any 3-Valve owner out there who is looking for a set of aftermarket cams that’s going to give some serious chop or serious lope at idle. One that’s going to provide some pretty decent mid to top end gains, and unlike any aftermarket big lope cam, is going to be able to be used without any extras such as aftermarket valve springs or cam phaser limiter kits.

Now first and foremost guys, the big appeal or the big draw with the Ford Performance Hot Rod Cams, is going to be that iconic classic muscle car big lope idle. Now this thing will offer some additional power benefits over your factory camshafts, but that’s not going to be the number one priority with the hot rod cams. Yes, they’re going to give you some additional power, but if making more power is your number one priority, there will be other options here on the site that will provide bigger gains.

Now the hot rod cams get that big choppy lope idle by giving you a lot more duration over your factory camshafts, which also happens to result in some more midrange power. You know, speaking of duration, these cams are going to offer duration at 50,000s of 221 for the intake side, and 240 for your exhaust side.

Now compare that to your factory camshafts with a duration at 50,000s of 175 degrees for the intake side, 193 for the exhaust side. And it’s pretty obvious to see why you’re getting that huge chop at idle, because this is a massive increase in duration over your factory cams.

In addition to that big duration, you are getting 1mm of additional lift out of these cams from Ford Racing over your factory cams, which isn’t a ton obviously, but it is enough to contribute to some top end power gains especially in the upper RPM range, while still being a no spring required cam.

Now when you do start getting into the higher lift camshafts, that’s when the big power gains really start to come. However, it is at that point where the requirement for those extra valve springs or aftermarket valve springs are required, in addition to the limiter kits, which is just going to add to the overall cost and the install difficulty.

And again, that is one of the nice things about the Ford Racing Hot Rod Cams. You can essentially drop these things in and go, without the need for the aftermarket valve springs or the limiter kits, and you’re still going to get that awesome idle, you’re still going to be making more power over your factory camshafts.

But let’s talk about the power a little bit more because that is obviously a big expectation when adding a set of aftermarket cams like this. And guys, this is going to be one of those cases where the more mods you have, the more gains you’ll see when using the hot rod cam shafts.

Now long tube headers are going to be a biggy here, guys. But going even further, looking at aftermarket intake manifolds, even ported heads, all of these are going to yield you even bigger results or gains when using the Ford Racing Cam Shafts, in addition to of course the basic bolt-ons or intakes, mid pipes, exhausts, things like that.

And you can use forced induction with the Ford Performance or Ford Racing Hot Rod Cams if you like. But sticking naturally aspirated here, anywhere from 20 to 30 wheel with your basic bolt-ons long tube headers is not unusual. However, don’t expect much when it comes to torquings, which are going to be minimal at best.

The Ford Racing Hot Rod Cams will be one of your more expensive options on the site when it comes to aftermarket camshafts at just over 800 bucks, but you do have to consider one thing here, guys. Other aftermarket big idle cams like the Comp Cam Mutha Thumpr for instance, do require the use of additional parts like that cam limiter kit, which is ultimately going to add to the final price tag.

Speaking of the install guys, this one is going to be a full three out of three wrenches on my overall scale of difficulty, because you do have to dive into the engine a little bit here to get these guys installed.
