Gastonia police announce new hires, promotion – news – gaston gazette – gastonia, nc

Gastonia Police Department held a ceremony this week to recognize the promotion of one officer to sergeant and swear in nine other recently hired officers. Shaunte Southern has been promoted to sergeant after joining the department in May 2006. He has served primarily with patrol and also with the Shift Tactical Team from 2007-2008, with the SWAT Team from 2008-2010, and has served with the Shift Tactical Team since 2010. Southern, 38, holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from North Carolina State University, and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Pfeiffer University. “We are proud of Sgt. Southern, and all our new officers,” Chief Robert Helton said. “With their education, training and experience, I’m confident they’ll be successful in their new positions.” Recently hired officers are: – Patrick Beaver – hired on July 27, 2015. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Appalachian State University, and completed his basic law enforcement training (BLET) at Gaston College. – Andrew Brack – hired on July 27, 2015. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology from N. C. State University, and completed the BLET program at Gaston College. – Brad Bumgardner – hired on Dec. 14, 2015. He previously worked as an officer for 15 years at Carolina Healthcare Systems Police Department in Shelby. He holds an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Gaston College, and is currently enrolled at Western Carolina University. – Seth Canipe – hired on July 27, 2015. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sports management from Elon University, and completed the BLET program at Gaston College. – David Guerin – hired on June 29, 2015. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from UNC Charlotte, and completed the BLET program at Gaston College. – Jonathan Hayes – hired on Jan. 19, 2016. He previously worked as an officer for two years with North Wilkesboro Police Department. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from UNC Charlotte. – Adam Hudson – hired on July 13, 2015. He holds an associate degree in criminal justice from Gaston College, and completed the BLET program at Gaston College. – Holden Prater – hired on Jan. 11, 2016. He previously worked as a deputy for almost four years at the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. He holds an associate degree in criminal justice from Gaston College. – Jesse Yager – hired on July 27, 2015. He holds an associate degree from Gaston College, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from UNC Charlotte, and completed the BLET program at Gaston College.
