How to tell when your dsg transmission is defective – vw eos forum volkswagen eos forums gas constant mmhg

I hate to sound like an expert on bad transmissions, but after having gone through 2 blown DSG transmissions in 11,000 miles (one year), I think I know all of the symptoms. I should tell you that I am an older guy who drives the car to work and around on weekends just to enjoy the convertible. I do not race or abuse the car in any way – I am just a normal driver.

I kind of find the issue to be very simple, i.e. if the transmissions jerks between shifts, emits a loud ‘clunk’ when shifting, or your PNRD display flashed, or you experience any irregular lag when starting out these are all of the symptoms I have had prior to the transmissions blowing out. In both cases the dealer replaced the medtronic unit and each time that was not the problem, the transmissions burned up (you could smell it) and ceased to operate.

To me, it is no mystery, the transmission works nicely when it is NOT broken, but I could tell both times that ‘something was rotten in Denmark’ . You just need to insist that the problem be fully remedied and insist upon your rights to have this made right. These 2 occurences did not cost me anything and they gave me a loaner car, but it was still a very unpleasant experience each time.

I hope that everyone with DSG transmissions drive trouble free and not have the incredible hassles I have had. I have put in a formal complaint to the NHTSB and they have 10 complaints similar to me on their web site, so this is I think, a real, and under reported problem with the DSG units. If you have problems register a complaint. Only by collecting the true number of occurrences will they be able to act and make VW to make a permanent fix.
