Abstract: Foreword This issue of J. Phys. Conf. electricity 2015 Series contains the proceedings of the 24 th InternationalSymposium on the Jahn-Teller Effect, with the subtitle: “Electron-vibration phenomena in moleculesand solids: Symmetry breaking and beyond”. Abstract: Results from four different approximations to the phonon-assisted quantum adsorption rate for coldatoms on a 2D material are compared and contrasted: (1) a loop expansion (LE) based on theatom-phonon coupling, (2) non-crossing approximation (NCA), (3) independent boson modelapproximation (IBMA), and (4) a leading-order soft-phonon resummation method (SPR). The SPR methodtreats the adsorbed atom as a surface polaron where the phonon cloud accompanying the bound atom isa phonon coherent state. Abstract: Based on the data analysis of ultrasonic experiments, a novel approach has been developed to exploreJahn-Teller effect (JTE) problems in non-cubic crystals with JT centers without involving additionalexperimental data beyond the information about the electronic term and crystal symmetry.Distinguished from cubic crystals, the axis of symmetry of the bulk non-cubic crystal do notnecessarily coincide with those of the local impurity center, thus complicating the relation betweenthe distortions produced by the ultrasound wave and the JTE active modes. Abstract: We present a possible explanation for a recently observed magnetic field induced charge order incuprate superconductors (Edkins et al. arXiv:1802.04673 [cond-mat.supr-con]).
