M on the lake, argegno, italy – homeaway d cypha electricity

The apartment is the ground floor and basement of a three-story property, built on the mountain slope below Via Schignano, nestled up against the stone. In Argegno village the alley ways are narrow and winding. One of these, Via Garibaldi, leads from the village up to Via Schignano.

The apartment is furnished with an Asian/Italian fusion. Furnishings are lacquered powder red, olive black and chocolate brown. Wardrobes are tapered cabinet style, and the apartment is littered with Asian fabrics and silk rugs together with unique antiques from China, Indonesia and beyond.

There is a bright kitchen-living room with access to the terrace, a master bedroom (off the kitchen) small center bedroom and 3rd bedroom with access to the village side terrace. If you want to avoid the direct sun, shutters will provide pleasant semi-shade.

Guests will need to park their car a little way from the apartment and walk the last few yards (approx. 200 m). The house has a simple facade – inside, roll the shutters up and it is flooded with light. You are bathed in daylight and can enjoy a wonderful view of the lake from every room.

The folks that manage this property have really done a wonderful job. After many many hours of traveling, the last thing we felt like doing was grocery shopping, but thankfully, there was coffee, croissants, and milk already in the frig. What a class operation. Oh, and the Proseco was the cherry on top.

Complaints- wow, was it ever hot, and the fans barely made it livable. Not sure the management could have done anything, as I guess no air conditioning is the norm. They did bring an extra fan! Curtains in the master bedroom are so sheer that you better be ready to wake up at sunrise! If you have a car, construction required us to park at the bottom of the hill. Not really a big deal once we deciphered the parking signs.

Now for the rest. Argegno is a great town with plenty of restaurants, a gondola to take you to the top of the surrounding hills, and a boat ferry to take you anywhere else. There is a very expensive looking hotel/restaurant across the street right on the water. We thought it would be too expensive, but in fact it was a great value.

The view from this home is stunning. Our family spent many hours on the terrace, taking in the sights from the lake and the lightning shows during the frequent storms that blew in while we were visiting. The three bedrooms allow for ample space for a family or couples traveling together to spread out comfortably at the end of the day. The home was clean and well-supplied with linens.

Be sure eat dinner at La Piazetta (SO very good. Christian the manager and his staff offer attentive and professional service), order a end-of-day bottle from the Enoteca wine bar and have your midday treat at the gelateria – all there in the piazza. Also Bistro Argegno, directly across from the post office, has delicious lunch specials and friendly conversation with the owner.

If you need stamps or other postal service, the post office experience was pleasant and the attendant there seems to know everyone she assisted. There is a small mini-market type store with limited hours just off the piazza. We did not take the bus to get to the larger grocery stores.

The boat ferry is completely easy and traveler-friendly to use getting from the train station in Como and to other places on the lake one might want to visit. The fast ferry services limited towns – and Argegno is thankfully one of those. Buy your tickets onsite at the station on the day of travel.

The house has a simple facade – inside, roll the shutters up and it is flooded with light. You are bathed in daylight and can enjoy a wonderful view of the lake from every room. In the summer the locals and tourists lounge and swim at the many Lidos scattered around the lake. As the sun sets the Lido’s come alive with gossip and the clink of Prosecco glasses. This picturesque and ancient village is crossed by the Telo stream which splits into two parts, after falling down from a the towns ravine. The two are joined by an old stone bridge with a lancet arch. From Argegno, it is possible to take a cable car up to Pigra (881m), which is situated on a plateau that enjoys a beautiful view of the lake. From here, it is possible to go on to the Valle della Camoggia, which is in the oasis of Argegno-Cima della Duaria, a conservation area. The road, which runs along Val d’Intelvi, also starts from Argegno and after following this road for about about 16 km, you will arrive at Lanzo. Skiing: This beautiful lake region of Italy is not the best for skiing as you may imagine, despite its scenery, crisp air and near perfect visibilty and mountains capped in winter snow. It does however have Skiing opportunities at local resorts for a day out. There is a small ski area on Mt. Lema, not more than 10 km from Lugano, but you have to be lucky to have enough snow for skiing. In Ticino, the local Swiss Canton, the best places to ski are probably either San Bernardino (south of the pass of the same name) or Airolo (south of Gotthard pass). Both are reachable in about 1 hour by car across the Swiss border. There are direct trains to Airolo as well from Lugano and hence from Italian Stations. To S. Bernardino there is only a bus connection. For more snow try Andermatt (on the north side of Gotthard pass) which has normally good snow conditions and a good choice of runs. The closest major ski resorts are St. Moritz and Madesimo toward the Splugen Pass which is approx.100km.
