Within a couple of miles of the home is the town of Flat Rock, home to the Flat Rock Playhouse (the North Carolina State Theater), and the Carl Sandburg Home. Carl Sandburg was Abraham Lincoln’s biographer, a U.S. Poet Laureate, and a well known musician and journalist. The Playhouse puts on Broadway plays to packed out audiences throughout the year. The Carl Sandburg Home is operated by the National Park Service and has tours of the home (which was left just as it was when he died), extensive hiking trails, and a running goat farm.
