Mercedes-Benz has now updated the rest of the E-Class range, which involves the W213 Sedan and S213 Estate. Aside from the standard E-Class models, customers can also opt for the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 4Matic+ models which replace the previous E 43 4Matic offerings.

We’ll start with the regular models first, where there isn’t much new on the outside aside from the addition of an optional SportStyle Package. With this option selected, additional aesthetic details are introduced to complement the standard interior and interior specification lines (i.e. Exclusive and Avantgarde).

The package includes a chrome louvre below the front bumper, a badge on the front fender, a high-gloss black chrome trim in the rear bumper and visible tailpipe embellishers. As for the interior, the package introduces a black fabric headliner, centre console in black open-pore ash wood, sport pedals in brushed stainless steel with black rubber studs, and SportStyle Package floor mats.

When specified with the Avantgarde exterior, the package adds two high-gloss black louvres for the front grille, chrome trim element for the front bumper, chrome interior door pins and aluminium interior trim elements with light carbon grain on top of the aforementioned items.

Focusing on the interior, the E-Class Sedan and Estate now come with the latest generation of steering wheels with Touch Control, as per the latest W205 C-Class. The Seat Comfort Package is now standard in the Exclusive, Avantgarde, and AMG Line interior lines, as is the analogue clock in combination with the COMAND Online infotainment system.

Other revisions include high-gloss brown ash wood and high-gloss brown walnut trim for the centre console, and painted paddle shifters (instead of galvanised ones) for models with the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. The infotainment system now offers a dual phone mode, which allows incoming calls to be accepted on two mobile phones at the same time (only one outgoing call at a time). You can also connect a third device like a tablet via Bluetooth too.

In terms of powertrains, a range of diesel engines are being offered at market launch, including the new E 400 d 4Matic. The variant is powered by an OM656 3.0 litre turbocharged inline-six diesel engine that makes 340 PS at 3,600 to 4,400 rpm and 700 Nm of torque at 1,200 to 3,200 rpm. Other models include the E 200 d, E 220 d, E 220 d 4Matic and E 300 d – all with 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesels with outputs ranging from 150 PS/360 Nm to 245 PS/500 Nm.

The most powerful option is of course the E 53 4Matic+, which gets the same mild hybrid setup as the cabriolet and coupe versions released previously. Where the E 43 4Matic had a M276 3.0 litre biturbo V6 petrol engine with 401 PS and 520 Nm, the new model comes with a 3.0 litre biturbo inline-six that serves up 435 PS and 520 Nm.

The engine is paired with an AMG Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission and the brand’s AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. The mild hybrid system is represented by the EQ Boost starter generator, which operates on a 48-volt on-board electrical system to deliver 22 PS and 250 Nm of output when required.

Handling components include AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with continuously adjustable damping ADS+ (Adaptive Damping System). There’s three modes to choose from (Comfort, Spode and Sport+), and they correspond to the five Dynamic Select modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual), which also handles the response of the engine, transmission and steering.

To identify the new E 53 4Matic+ models, the bonnet now features prominent power bulges and at the rear, round twin tailpipe trim elements in high-gloss chrome (with Night package in high-gloss black) accompany a triple-fin diffuser. The interior meanwhile, gains a new AMG Performance steering wheel in black Nappa leather with red 12 o’clock marking.
