Since that day in July, he’s become an ambassador for the National Eating Disorders Association (a position he no longer holds), spoken in front of Congress and traveled all over the country to speak to young athletes, therapists and countless others about the journey that led him to where he is in 2019. He hopes to break down stigmas surrounding mental health and eating disorders, particularly with athletes and athletic programs, and to tell everyone it’s okay to have these issues.

Yeah, 100 percent. For me, it’s multiple factors here. I wasn’t a great athlete as a kid, I was short and pudgy. I was cut from my junior high basketball team 4 main gases in the atmosphere and I started thinking more and more, “You’re not good enough.” When I made the wrestling team. Abercrombie Fitch was big in high school, so I thought if you didn’t eat anything, you wouldn’t get fat, and if you worked out a ton, you’d get big. It wasn’t working. I was pulled out of my school on a stretcher. They told me, “Your heart rate’s low, you could die.” When I got to an in-patient facility, I had a room with no doors. I was told I was a threat to myself and others, and I was like, “I’m not trying to kill myself, I just want a six-pack.” I didn’t know, I didn’t realize it. One of the therapists said, “You do look like you are killing yourself.”

When you’re malnourished, your brain doesn gas and electric nyc’t function properly. In my senior year, I started getting nourished and I got back into baseball. That’s when I started to grow. It took me a long time to get there. I was late bloomer so no colleges really wanted me. I went to Sacramento City College and my coach took me under his wing. He was never about physical aspects, he was more about how your mind can affect your performance. What I was starting to see is that it was helping me on the field and in my personal life.

When you talk to anyone who has suffered with anything in mental health, it never goes away. What you learn is healthy ways to cope with it. I’ve learned I have to practice mindfulness for myself to allow me to really appreciate gaining confidence. Anxiety never goes away but you learn how to deal with it. That’s power of having positive affirmation, having meditation practice in place. It never goes away, but you learn gas in dogs stomach how to deal with it. When I was in the minor leagues, I’ve thought my career was over multiple times. Years ago, I tore my quad and I got gas out game instructions a pulmonary embolism. But I believe I’ve been blessed with the platform to be able to help people. I’ve been talking about my eating disorder for seven years. When you get to the Majors, people start caring. And I think that’s an issue because I know there are people who reach out to me and say, I’ve had this for 20, 30, 40 years and haven’t been able to tell anybody. I have this opportunity now to go forth and impact lives. After my documentary with Uninterrupted, people have reached out and I’ve seen the impact my life can have.

When you’re a therapist, it’s hard for people to not say, “Oh you’re just telling me to do this.” When a coach says something, you think, “You’re my coach, you have to say that.” When you hear from a young athlete, “Look, this is what I struggle with, here’s my message, here’s what’s helped me,” people are more receptive to that. Have you had pro athletes reach out?

Absolutely, and here’s the problem we’re facing: Teams in baseball, the NFL, NBA are doing fantastic grade 9 electricity questions job. They’re providing sports psychology resources for players. The problem we’re facing is pro athletes don’t want to be tracked, they’re afraid it’ll be used against them in contract negotiations. Imagine if someone said, “This guy struggles with anxiety.” How do you think that’ll affect his contract? I had multiple people tell me I have to stop talking about (mental health) while I play. My point to everyone is: It’s hard for athletes to come out and say they struggle with these issues. I want to work with teams and tell them they can’t put sports psychologist next to the coach’s office. No players will use that v gashi halil bytyqi.
