— Allen Thomas Sample has been charged with murder and has pleaded not guilty in connection with the homicide of a Hopkins County man near Campbell in 2016. Sample has reportedly been tested more than once to determine whether he was insane at the time of the offense, while 196th District Court Judge J. Andrew Bench has set jury selection for Feb. 5

— Trial has been specially set to begin in the 354th District Court Feb. 15 in the murder trial of Michael Glen Garza of Quinlan, who along with Chacey Tyler Poynter of Royse City, has been indicted on one count of murder involving the death of Poynter’s husband, Robert L. Poynter III. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Curtis Doys Rust Jr. has pleaded not guilty to an indictment for murder involving the death of William Shay Sisk late on the night of May 20. Rust is accused of killing Sisk, 38, of Caddo Mills in the driveway of at a residence in the 3000 block of County Road 2172.

— A trial date is set in the 354th District Court for April 2 for Martin Ray Malone, of Wills Point, who has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder in connection with the shooting death of Jayme Malone Lopez, 54, also of Wills Point. Lopez was reported to have crashed her vehicle at around 6:25 a.m. May 19 in the 100 block of County Road 2475, notifying emergency dispatchers she had been shot. First responders quickly arrived at the scene, but Lopez could not be saved.

— General voir dire is set July 9 and the start of jury selection is scheduled Aug. 20 for Kaylon Laray Sephus, who ghas pleaded not guilty to one count of capital murder in connection with the death of 3-year-old Aliah Christine Walker. The indictment accuses Sephus of “hitting, punching or kicking” Walker with his hands or feet, and/or throwing or knocking Walker into a wall or furniture and/or using “object(s) unknown to the grand jury” on Dec. 30, 2014 at an apartment in Celeste.

— A pretrial hearing is scheduled the 196th District Court Wednesday for Timothy Adam Kelley, who has pleaded not guilty to one count of capital murder in connection with the November 2014 death of 70-year-old William Dow Schauer. Kyle Anthony Kauffmann pleaded guilty Jan. 7, 2016 to one count of capital murder n the same case and was automatically sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The indictments alleged both men acted together to murder Schauer by strangling the victim with a pillow case or cases, while in the course of committing a robbery.

— A hearing on discovery evidence is scheduled in the 196th District Court Jan. 10 for Carl Allen Welch, who has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder connection with the death of Terry R. Cale of Wills Point. Cale was reportedly shot multiple times outside of a residence on Archer Lane in far south Hunt County late on the night of May 16, 2014.

— A pretrial hearing is scheduled in the 196th District Court Jan. 17 in the case of Damien Demont Smith, who has pleaded not guilty to a count of capital murder in connection with the Aug. 4, 2014 shooting death of John Luis Estes in Greenville. Officers with the Greenville Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at the Galleria Apartments, 5015 Joe Ramsey Boulevard. The first officer on the scene found Estes face down in the grassy area at the northwest corner of the property. Estes had suffered a single gunshot wound to the torso and was deceased.

— A pretrial hearing is set in the 196th District Court Jan. 17 for Tyrone Jamaal Williams who has pleaded not guilty to two counts of capital murder in connection with the June 17, 2016 slayings of Nichole Elizabeth Gonzales, 27, and her mother, Vicki Ann Gonzales, 51 at a residence just outside of Commerce.
