Today’s Palmer Ranch development is part of 80,000 acres originally owned by Bertha Palmer, a Chicago socialite and wife of department store tycoon Potter Palmer, who settled in Sarasota in 1910. Becoming one of the first prominent, wealthy northern visitors to make Sarasota their year-round residence, Mrs. Palmer developed a lavish estate, dubbed “The Oaks,” where she entertained famous guests, added extensive gardens, and served as a leader developing the area. Her sons inherited the property upon her death and they continued developing the area.
