Haydée was a wonderful host. We arrived to Old San Juan earlier than expected and she was kind enough to come back from running errands to check us in early. She texted us to let us know about a magic/acrobat show that she thought our kids would enjoy, and they loved it! The home is located just a short walk to the water. Listen to the advice from guide books about not needing a car in Old San Juan. We rented a car for the week because we stayed in Luquillo for the first part of our vacation and wanted to travel around. It was helpful for us because our kids wanted to go to the beach everyday, even after we arrived in Old San Juan. But street parking and driving on the narrow cobble stone streets can be a challenge for a visitor. Haydée was a great host and showed us where to find the cheapest parking garage that was a short 10 minute walk to the house. Coming from Chicago the parking garage was ridiculously cheap ($1.40 for the first hour and 55 cents for every hour after that). You can walk to everything from this home (farmer’s market, grocery store, shops, restaurants and bars, etc.). Our kids loved that there was an open courtyard in the middle of the house. They watched in amazement as the little lizards climbed the wall and a song bird of some kind came to visit each morning at breakfast and work on a nest. We will definitely be keeping this on our list of places to come back to if we visit San Juan again. It’s far enough away from the tourist/cruise ship area to not be noisy at night, yet close enough to walk to that area for some of the things you might need from a CVS or Walgreen’s. The house itself is beautiful, with so much to see. It truly is a masterpiece. There are various pieces of art displayed throughout the house, even in the courtyard. There is a great collection of books if you don’t bring something yourself and need a good book to read while you lounge in the hammock. Haydée, thank you for opening up your beautiful home to our family. We truly enjoyed our first visit to Puerto Rico!
