Rode the Sunrise Limited from Houston TX to El Paso TX overnight, 18hr train ride. Our train ran smooth with no mechanical issues and was mostly on time (maybe 10 mins off?). OMG, if you have ever traveled coach on a plane or ridden a cross-country bus, Amtrak is HEAVEN compared to that! There is sufficient room in coach to lay back comfortably with your legs outstretched. There is one single electric outlet per seat. The observation car was clean and a great place to leisurely watch the landscape slide by. The dining car was a good place to meet and chat with other travelers and hear about their travel adventures over a good meal.

My three main concerns are this. 1) Based on the reviews here and experiences electricity in salt water experiment of fellow Amtrak riders I might on the train, each trip is a gamble. Might go smooth like mine; might be a nightmare. There’s doesn’t seem to be a middle ground of just OK travel. 2) The meals and cafe prices are outrageously expensive for what you get. My son bought a cup of Ramen and was charged $3 for the gas efficient suv 2008 priviledge. He can get it out of a vending machine for a dollar, and I can get it from a store 10 for a $1. So, buyer beware. Bring your own meals, but you can’t heat it or store it on the train. However, part of what causes the price jump between a coach seat and a sleeper cabin is the food electricity generation in california cost. If you pay the upcharge for a sleeper cabin, your meals and room service are included. The food tastes good, but the cost is crazy. 3) The staff. As noted in other reviews, the staff are not at all invested in their jobs. They don’t care what you want; they’ll give you what you gas x side effects’re required to get, and nothing more. They don’t smile. They sit in the dining car and talk amongst themselves or play on their phones. If you ask them any questions, it’s made clear that you are bothering and inconveniencing them. I would travel Amtrak again despite the service, because I loved the people I met on the train. Very like-minded travelers out to see the country by rail. More Show less

I ride train 98 Silver Meteor to this station several times a year, sometimes I go all the way to Miami which is an extremely long train ride; the Orlando Station is not as impressive as the large city Amtrak stations I have used, Basically,one large waiting area, nothing really stands out except the wood benches with high backs, not much around the area within walking distance that’s worth mentioning either – definitely not the touristy side of town but, each time I have used the station during the day hours, there’s been a food vendor on site outside the train platform passenger side selling food. Taxis seem to know the train schedules and are available if you need one. My train is usually on time c gastritis but there have been several instances where the train arriving from the Miami route had to wait 40 to 50 minutes to come into the station due to the late arrival of another train still loading passengers. Amtrak Silver Meteor trains are not the most reliable routes to be on time and the train always seem to be delayed in route for various reasons but they eventually get you to where you are going – just don’t expect Amtrak to compensate you or give you a credit for sometimes arriving as late as 3 hours beyond the designated time on your ticket. The train ride itself is fine if I’m not on the train more than six or seven hours but beyond that ,riding in coach can be uncomfortable and the bathrooms start to really smell and gross me out. My advice is if it is going to be a long train ride like all the way to Miami from Charleston reserve a roomette or one bedroom sleeper car that way you are in your own confined space with your own bathroom and shower with meals bottled water included and your own porter that checks on you – will even prep your bed for you, the beds are not comfortable in my opinion but you do have the option to convert the seat into a bed – It cost more but so worth it.

This review is long over due. Over the course of the last 4 years using Amtrak on a regular basis for the NYC to DC and back route, I’ve increasingly seen a tendency of staff to speak to customers as a Kindergarten teacher might speak to her class when he’s reprimanding them. There are other issues on Amtrak, of course, poor internet, announcements you can gas jet’t hear, a lack of useful announcements in general, etc, but this is really to focus on the aforementioned attitude of the staff serving Amtrak’s passengers. Latest example, this morning, train 79 from NYC to DC leaving 725am. It starts the minute you hit the platform with staff literally (!!) screaming at passengers to go in a particular direction and that you WILL be sitting next to someone. This is not speaking loudly to be heard, mind you. Throughout the entire trip it continued. I saw staff rudely dismiss questions about when the cafe car would be open while literally blocking someone’s way walking in that direction; telling several older gentleman to have to step behind the door gsa 2016 new orleans when pulling into a station by saying step behind the door until we pull in, step back, step back making a hand motion like one would use to shoo away flies without a single ‘excuse me’ or ‘please’. I wish I could say this was an exception, but it wasn’t, and it’s getting worse. Amtrak needs to curb this problem before it gets out of control (if it’s not already) and provide their staff with some training in customer relations.
