Rifle power equivalent to shotgun slug – survivalist forum electricity projects for class 12

Slugs are great up close and personal which I guess is kinda the point if you’re surprised by a bear. Personally I think slugs are a little anemic for something with that many teeth. By the time that slug loses so much energy it falls to the ground the .308 will just be getting warmed up and still have plenty of energy but if you take range out of the equation 45-70 is pretty punchy. I never compared the ballistics between 30-30 and one oz slugs but I sure wouldn’t want a 30-30 in Grizzly country! I would feel pretty good about .308

One thing I’ve also read about before is the legal aspect, if you are overly nervous and shoot a bear from TOO far away you can get in trouble, they will argue that you were not yet in danger. Just a consideration. Yeah I’m wondering if I’d rather have a Benelli M2 or a Scar 17 in that situation. If I’m even allowed to carry a Scar 17 in Alaska. I’m going to Alaska next year, that totally gives me an excuse to spend unnecessary money on a bear gun lol, even though I know that all I have to do is wear bells and bears won’t come near me.

Either will stop any bear or moose in Alaska at the distances your talking about. I have friends and family there, and some of them have lived there all their lives and don’t plan on ever leaving except around the holidays when they visit my place and shoot a few hogs here.

Between all of us, around a dozen or so browns have been taken. ( A few are hunting guides up there) One did replace his 4570 guide gun with a Scar17, and later replaced the Scar with an LRB M14SA " Tanker" Reason why he dumped the SCAR for the M14 = the latter proved to be more reliable in his environment overall.

A 308 chambered rifle loaded with the right ammo would be more useful if your a hunter. ( Deer, wolf, caribou, bear, moose, etc….) A 168gr Barnes TTSX bullet will stop a bear if required, take a full grown bull moose down at over 200 yards, and caribou at over 400 yards. ( I hunt using my M14S and M14SA tankers) 308 ammunition is also quite a bit lighter in weight compared to 4570 or shotgun slugs…if that matters via your plans. The other thing you gain with either over 308 is felt recoil. ( Well placed shots are all that matters if you ever need to defend yourself.)

So a Benelli with slugs has less kick than the average 308? As for the Scar 17, I’ve been watching videos on it and they say it kicks like a 223 because of the muzzle break. However, the one video had people at the rifle range looking over because the noise & concussion were pretty brutal. What’s your opinion on that? My theory is starting to be that the increased kick would actually be less annoying than brutal noise & concussion. Although follow up shots would be sweet with the Scar 17!! Scar 17 suppressed must be the greatest setup on Earth!
