The road from Tok to Chicken was on-again, off-again paved. It was full of twists and uphill driving. Just before we reached Chicken, there was a sign reading End of Pavement and it was true. You have to be prepared for little service in Chicken. We only had 15 Amp power electricity in india voltage with no other hookups, but it was so cool that the air-conditioner was not needed.

I planned on leaving for the boarder by 6:00 a.m. I wanted to reach the boarder before it opened because I had already heard that the section of the road on the USA side was more narrow than on the Canadian. Since the boarder opened at 8:00, I felt that I could avoid meeting traffic on the narrow section kushal gas agencies belgaum of the road. That was a very smart move on my part. Because i was planning on staying at one of the provencial parks on the west side of the Youkon, I needed to both dump my tanks and fill up my fresh water tanks before leaving Chicken.

I’m really glad that I took the drive on the TOW, and… I did an Alaska trip in a 37 foot Class-A Mortor Home with a tow car. On the way back, I really wanted to drive to Dawson City from central Alaska. We planned on spending the night in Chicken, AK and then drive the next day into Dawson City. This was in August of 2016. Our site was right on the Youkon River and we never had to wait for more than 5 min to get on the ferry to cross the river. I highly recommend making this trip. we first drove top of the world ‘highway’ in a rental car 2 years ago, this time we returned to drive the DEMPSTER, so added two more turns on top of the world to get there. we were white knuckled the first time around, this time with experience and a camper mounted on a year old ford xlt super duty 4 door pickup we were at complete ease. coming from either anchorage on rt 1, joining the alaskan hwy (rt 2), or from canada on the alcan, you start out on what is the taylor highway, or alaska rt 5, at the tetlin junction, which takes you thru chicken (66mi) then at jack wade junction (30 more mi), north to eagle (65mi). the top of the world actually begins/ends at the taylor and includes boundary spur from jack wade to the us/canada border + yukon hwy 9 (about 109mi from taylor hwy @ jack wade to dawson YT). all that said, not many thru people on these roads venture north to eagle; the road is narrow, winding and frictional electricity examples hilly, and not fun if you’re towing, altho you’ll see many locals camped along the way with often elaborate rigs, 4 wheelers and the like. we stopped in chicken this time, an interesting place to stop/stay w/gas, food, history galore, a mining dredge, shopping services, and characters. remote eagle, on the yukon river, has a lodging/restaurant, but we camped at a lovely small BLM campground across the grass airstrip on the old fort. it was worth the drive, but we did not make it to eagle village, a native settlement 12 miles further down the road. we were forced to unload our firewood crossing into canada, so use it or lose it…pay attention to border open electricity kwh/closed times as it is not 24 hours and you can’t cross. there is also a time zone change. gas is only available at (nearby tok), chicken, eagle, then dawson. we love the free ferry that takes you over the yukon into dawson; when it is busy with lots of large vehicles it can take a bit of time. there is a lovely territorial campground on the west side before you cross, quite a contrast from the dawson city rv camps which are pretty much gas bubbles in colon parking lots but then you forego hookups, water, hot showers, laundry; the trappings of modern society, and the good restaurants and grocery stores in dawson. there are a couple paddlewheel wrecks from the gold rush days along the beach north of the campground. with 3 passages on ‘top of world’, we can say it is not for anyone in a hurry, mainly gravel, paved/patched from tetlin nearly to chicken surprising paved parts on boundary spur. the experience can be different based on the weather and traffic. we have not had any problems with flat tires or windshield gas 37 weeks pregnant dings; probably by being cautious, taking care when passing oncoming traffic, and running well maintained vehicles. do not be naive to think 106 miles is a 2 hour drive…avg. speed ~30-45mph. it is an experience worth doing, and for us a stepping stone to the Dempster, which is quite another experience altogether.
