Seneca tried to get clemson professors fired for speaking out in hammond case, emails show

While they were working to help the city of Seneca deal with the media onslaught in the aftermath of the Zachary Hammond shooting last year, Complete Public Relations also was drafting a letter to the president of Clemson University suggesting he fire two professors who spoke out against the city.

That was just one chapter revealed in a three-month-long chain of emails between the Greenville PR firm and the city that the city’s lawyers tried to shield from public view.

Several of the 830 emails also show how the public relations consultant was evasive in answering some of the many questions from news media, including The Greenville News’ inquiry about whether the police department had any photos of the scene of the July 26, 2015 incident in which the 19-year-old Hammond was shot and killed by a Seneca police officer.

The city also never followed up on its own PR agency’s recommendation that it would help its public standing if it filed suit seeking to compel SLED to release the dash cam video of the shooting.

The unredacted emails were released to The Greenville News by John Boyanoski, president of Complete Public Relations. Gas zeta costa rica The city has not yet responded to the newspaper’s Freedom of Information request for the same documents.

“We are happy to hand this over. 9gag nsfw We don’t feel there is anything inflammatory in there,” Boyanoski said. O gosh “Essentially it is just a large email talking about strategy and sharing information.”

The city last week agreed to settle a lawsuit the Hammond family filed against it for $2.15 million, with Hammond family attorney Eric Bland saying the judge’s decision to force the city to turn over the emails in their entirety appeared to be one of the factors that compelled its decision.

As several activist groups organized rallies calling for the city to release the video in the months following Hammond’s death, two Clemson professors joined in the criticism of the city’s policies.

He instructed Boyanoski to draft a letter to Clemson University President Jim Clements to complain about the professors — Todd May and Chenjerai Kumanyika.

“He needs to know his professors are using the Clemson name to add creditably to their speech as they did again last night by using their title,” Dietterick wrote to Boyanoski on Oct. “Two Clemson professors are using their position with a state agency to try and humiliate public officials,” the letter drafted by Boyanoski in Dietterick’s name says. Clemson spokeswoman Robin Denny said the university received the letter from Seneca and responded that it was not a university matter because the professors were there as private citizens, not in an official capacity.

The emails don’t appear to contain any discussions of plans to lie to the media or cover up information, although all the answers given didn’t turn out to be fully accurate.

Bill Fox, managing editor of The Greenville News, sent a question to clarify, “That Seneca City and Seneca police are saying no such video exists and that no copies, facsimiles or still frames of such videos are in the possession of Seneca Police or City?”

In an email later that day, Police Chief John Covington tells Boyanoski that Tiller’s dash cam video was the only one taken, and that SLED took possession of it on the night of the incident. “We are in possession of the radio traffic audio from this incident, as we made a copy for SLED at their request and will be glad to provide that to them as well,” the chief wrote.

“From a community relations standpoint, there is a lot to be said if the City files a lawsuit to compel the release of the video and get it done before Bland makes his request,” a Sept. Gas in oil mower 8 email from Boyanoski to City Attorney Michael Smith and Covington says.

Apparently the city didn’t agree with that strategy, as it filed no lawsuit. The FBI and U.S. Gaz 67 Department of Justice are continuing a criminal investigation, according to Tiller’s attorney, who has said in court documents that an indictment is possible.

The video showed Tiller’s vehicle screeching to a halt in the Hardee’s parking lot behind Hammond’s car, and Tiller running toward Hammond with his gun drawn. Concern among city officials grew in September with news reports that SLED had turned its investigation report over to the solicitor, who said it could be three more weeks before she announces a decision.

Most of the emails have to do with questions and requests from news media outlets, mostly local but some from across the nation and overseas, as the case began to attract national and international attention. One email suggests filing a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission to try to get a local radio talk show host taken off the air and the station fined.

Complete Public Relations was paid $5,000 a month for three months to handle the media for the city. B games 2 Since voting to spend $250,000 out of its general fund toward settling the lawsuit, city officials have not responded to requests for comment.
