Sublime forest cottage just outside hawaii … – homeaway gas efficient cars 2015

In the Hawaiian language, a kipuka is a kind of oasis. It can be an island of forest surrounded by lava fields, saved from volcano goddess Pele’s embrace. Or a kipuka can be an opening within a forest, or even a dwelling, a home within the forest. This is our Kipuka — a cottage, a vacation home for you here on Hawai’i Island (”the Big Island”). We look forward to sharing it with you, and we welcome your questions.v=9icohy0gyqY

Kipuka Cottage is in a native Hawaiian rainforest just a 7-minute drive from amazing Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, where you can see the steaming glowing summit crater of Kilauea volcano. There are miles of hiking trails through lush forest and rocky volcanic landscapes. There are ancient historic sites, a volcano museum, art galleries, good restaurants, a wonderful community farmers market (don’t miss the used-book store) — and even a small bowling alley! A black-sand beach where turtles sunbathe is 30-minute drive in one direction. And 30 minutes in the other direction is the fun, funky, historic town of Hilo. View more

This property is perfectly situated near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Volcano Village (only about a 5 minute drive). The architecture of the building allows for great views of the immediate surrounding jungle. The soaking tub was a fantastic way to end the day after hiking. Guests of this property should be comfortable with a more remote setting (and the associated wildlife that entails) and should definitely bring in what ever food and supplies they might need since the local markets are quite pricey with limited. The reason for not giving 5 starts is due to the overwhelming mildew smell, dampness of the downstairs furniture cushions, and inability to regulate the internal humidity. While an elevated level of humidity is to be expected due to the amount of rain this area of the Island receives, we think there might have been a leak or something prior to our visit: We noticed there were protective barriers put up along some of the roof and window lines and the dampness inside was obviously beyond climate conditions. We contemplated moving to a near by hotel because of the mildew, but since we paid so much and since it was only for two days, we stayed. Also wanted to note that the futon bed could be replaced–it was quite lumpy and uncomfortable. If those issues are remedied, I’d recommend staying here.

I am so glad I found the cottage!! I arrived in the dark and was glad I had located it on google maps satellite before I left home since the cottage is not visible from the road, the driveway doesn’t look like much, and the road is very dark. The location was perfect! The cottage was exceptionally clean with beautiful large covered lanai. Everything I needed to start a fire in the stove was ready to go, and there was tons of space and privacy. I stayed for two nights and could have stayed longer in the cottage but was happy to be moving on from the rain and overcast skies that come with the January weather and elevation. The first night was a bit chilly, the wood stove, portable heaters, and hot soak in the gorgeous tub did the trick. There was lots of hot water for the tub and I love the quirky touches throughout the cottage. It is a bit tight getting up to the loft with the spiral staircase but the owners have made it as safe as possible with lighting and a good handrail. The loft bed was very comfortable and the bedding was perfect for the climate. I was thankful to have the use of an umbrella and I found a jacket in the closet. Waking in the morning to the sound of rain and surrounded on all sounds by an amazing view of the jungle was spectacular! I even loved looking at the interesting structure of the ceiling! It was hard to get out of the cottage in the mornings because I just wanted to curl up with a coffee, a blanket, and a book and enjoy the seclusion. I also loved the assortment of minidiscs of music and many many books. I did not use the kitchen except to store food in the fridge, but it appeared to be well appointed. I would only improve on the bathroom lighting since dim light is excellent for a tub soak but it is not a good all-purpose lighting. I really loved this cottage and am inspired to build something very similar for retirement.

I booked this cabin as part of a long-planned romantic vacation for myself and my man, but he had to return home unexpectedly. The the airline mixed up our luggage and sent him home with my bag, so I found myself alone and without by belongings. It was easy for me here to make the best of a bad situation and take advantage of the seclusion and serenity for inward reflection. Communication with Bill was easy and he had great advice for me for organizing our first trip to the Island of Hawaii. I would definitely book this cottage again if I am every back in Volcano and hopefully one day I will be.
