I booked a cooking class with Zabb E Lee Thai Cooking School last minute (within 48 hours) as my original plans to participate in a cooking class in Phuket fell through. My friend and I joined up with the group at the market (the last electricity distribution network wooden market in Chiangmai) instead of being picked up at our AirBnB since we were running late to learn about the different vegetables and herbs to be used in the dishes we were cooking. Perhaps it was the day we went or the time of day, but the market is quite small and empty and (like many places in Chiangmai) seemed catered to tourists k electric jobs or foreigners. There were at least 4 other cooking schools at the market at the same time. Our teacher (Aoy) was VERY funny, and I really enjoyed learning from her. She made hilarious quips that really ingrained information about the food into my memory (angry limes!). The cooking class portion (in an open-air building a few blocks from the market) was fun and delicious, but also A LOT OF WORK. As cooking novices, my friend and I were both exhausted after cooking for over 2 hours. Ann (the owner) and Aoy were very accommodating to any unexpected changes – for example, my boyfriend got sick and was unable to attend, but they did not charge me for the cancellation. Additionally, one of the couples in the group decided last minute to have only one person cook and the other one person as a Visitor (400 gas vs diesel engine THB). This may be a better idea for anyone traveling as a duo as you make a lot of food – I ended up having to throw some of my food away because I didn’t have time to eat it before we left Chiangmai! The equipment used was clean and well-maintained (although you do double-dip your tasting spoons a few times), however it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to recreate the dishes exactly if you live in the US/Europe/Australia unless you happen to have a gas stove gas natural, an aluminum wok, a bamboo rice cooker basket thing, a julienne peeler, and a gigantic mortar and pestle. Being Taiwanese, I have a wok at home, but making sticky rice on my own in the US is going to be an interesting experiment. Overall, it was a great experience, and I learned a lot about Thai cuisine and ingredients. I highly recommend! More Show less
