Worth it. We did one overnight then a couple of nights in Jasper then three nights to Toronto. I’ve read some very negative reviews but a lot depends on expectations. This is a train not a luxury cruise! First train had been updated and second was dowdy by comparison but nothing drastic. I would recommend a sleeper plus, small but perfectly formed with toilet and basin. Single compartments look to be a squash and toilet is a footrest during the day! We had bunk beds-a challenge to get to top bunk but a laugh. Very comfy beds though why sheets are changed every day e85 gasoline I don’t know. Turn down service and choccies – nice touch. Plenty of towels and toiletries and electricity sockets. The bunks gasbuddy diesel are put up and down by VIA attendants and there are 2 comfy chairs during the day. Shared shower at end of carriage but no queue. The train fairly rattles along so actually sleeping can be a challenge. Snuggle down and ponder how lucky you are to be making the journey! Train stops often to enter siding and allow freight train past. Some of these are over 2 miles long and don’t fit the sidings so somebody has to give way. Consequently train often late. DO NOT PLAN A TIGHT CONNECTION. You need at least 8 hours. Worldclass chefs so food excellent lots of choice. Bar service you pay for. Complimentary tea, coffee, juice,… Worth it. My wife and I travelled business class on Via Rail from Moncton, NB to Quebec City on Wednesday 30 August 2017. The very expensive business class fare entitled us to dinner in the dining car. Sadly my dinner was inedible and I reported this to the server who in turn reported this to her supervisor. I had ordered the pork and my wife wisely chose the chicken. The pork dish consisted of mashed potato with some corn kernels mixed in, broccoli and two skewers with 4 cubes of what I assumed were pork belly or similar on each. I explained to the supervisor that the broccoli was soggy and appeared to have been microwaved once or twice too often, the pork was tough, had not been heated through and tasted raw. The supervisor said he would report this to the contractor who provided the food and they marched off with pretty much the whole plate less the pork I had attempted to eat. I was not offered an alternative dish so had to make do with a few morsels of chicken from my wife’ plate. The server did return and begrudgingly advised that I would not be charged for my glass of wine ($8) but my wife would have to pay for hers! Thank you zyklon b gas effects Via Rail – very sad as Via Rail don’t give these rides away. Avoid this dish.
