This lovely prohibition-styled retro bar offers a magnificent selection of spirits and ales with DJs every Friday night, rolling out lashings of ska, northern soul, bluegrass, country and rock’n’roll.

Tucked away on Loughborough Road, this intimate, late night, roots-rock-reggae venue is a slice of pure, ungentrified Brixton. The vibes are laid back, the folks friendly, big cans of decent lager cost £3 and they’re open till 6am. Result!

Worship at the shrine of funk and praise uplifting house at this catacomb bar/restaurant nestled under St Matthew’s Church. Throw away your fluoro clobber and glowsticks because the 414 is going poptastic with another welcome visit from the Boogie Nights crew. Mullet up and dance all night to an onslaught of nothing but tasty pop from the 80s to the 00s.

Gnawa Blues All Stars at Hootananny

95 Effra Road, Brixton, SW2 1DF, 8pm-midnight, Free

Described as a “shapeshifting project,” the All Stars are headed up by Simo Lagnawi, joined by an ensemble of guest musicians. Nominated for 2 Songlines awards, Simo’s never happier than when he’s mixing’n’mashing up music from countries such as Gambia, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Japan, Venezuela, and the Caribbean. And possibly Rockall too.
