World class adventure – review of the blue train, pretoria, south africa – tripadvisor e sampark electricity bill payment

We took the Blue Train as the first part of our holiday to South Africa… We were met at Joberg airport by our private transfer to Pretoria and after recovering from our flights with an overnight stay at the Sheraton we were collected early and taken to the Blue gas after eating salad Train lounge where coffee and refreshments were laid on… Unfortunately the Kimberley stretch was under repair so an alternative route was taken which did nothing to spoil the experience of this beautiful train with amazing staff, food and service that was beyond our expectations… Through the windows Africa was displayed in all its glory… Giraffes/Antelopes Rhinos were seen, rolling hills and the savannah constantly changing. Evening dinner was a most splendid affair power per kwh with tuxedos, jackets and ties worn by all added to the wonderful food presented… Although the few delays we did have which resulted in us enjoying a second night on the train the high standards remained. We encountered so may problems while gas efficient cars on this train that it could only ever get 1 star. I don’t know where to start it was that bad. Firstly we departed 2 hours late because the engine was faulty, then it took us nearly 2 hours to get to roughly Stellenbosch due to signal problems. These first two problems I could have lived with but once we passed through the mountains the real fun started. The train broke down once again due to a bust pipe, this left it incapacitated in the middle of the Karoo while it was 42 degrees outside gas in babies home remedies. Obviously the air conditioning did not work because the electricity also stopped working. None of the windows open so it was like a sauna gas up shawty inside. It took them over 3 hours to resolve this problem. Then I thought let’s have a cold bath to cool down a bit which was also a joke as the cold water was as hot as the hot water. We attempted to go for supper but it was still so hot inside the train it was very uncomfortable. To add to the poor service my wife who is vegetarian received only what can be described as a terrible meal. Absolutely no pre planning for her requirements had been made whatsoever. No printed menu no starter just a single offering for main which was poorly made. I have eaten better food on economy flights that come out of a microwave. Then the train ran out of water twice even though it was only half full. This meant no flushing toilets for over 3 hours. The types of electricity generation methods sad thing about this whole experience is that this train has potential to be great as it is beautifully fitted out and had the basics worked like the air conditioning it would have been a much better trip. We arrived in Pretoria 4 1/2 hours late . Since this journey not one word of apology has been received from the blue train management as they obviously are not too fussed about their customers. My advise wd gaster theory would be to use the large sum of money you save from not going on the blue train and stay at the Mount Nelson or the one and only for 3 nights , go out for 3 meals a day at nice restaurant and then fly to Joburg. All for about the same price.

We paid for our friends Brian and Joan to travel on the Blue Train from Pretoria to Cape Town on 19th Oct as a special treat. We would meet them in CT for the rest of the holiday. It didn’t depart! We have since had a full refund and a letter explaining that it was probably due to vandalism of the electrics that gas house the train was unable to leave. Most of the guests were flown down to CT but due to a recent medical op, our friends couldn’t fly. The were told that they would be accommodated In the Sheraton overnight, Shosholoza train next day. Neither were booked for them gas laws definition chemistry and they had to make the reservations themselves, although BT did pay. They had a compartment with a handbasin which had no water, shared toilets down the carriage. Joan got food poisoning and was ill for 24 hours. Finally arrived in CT 36 hours later than we planned. Another substitute offered was Rovos but this was both fully booked and several days later, eating into our holiday plans, so couldn’t accept. We travelled on Rovos on our return journey which we had booked a year earlier. This was our second trip with Rovos and was the highlight without doubt. More expensive but worth every Rand. We will never book with Blue Train again. The manager at our hotel says that since a change in ownership a few years ago, Blue Train has been getting worse and routinely has problems. Asked us to report our issues as they are not likely to improve if they think that they can get away with poor gas constant maintenance.
